HSE L117 update – it’s not new, it is necessary
Much has been written recently about the HSE L117 legislation update which is aimed at ensuring that employers, and those responsible for safe operations of fork lift truck fleets, are maintaining their equipment and providing the right training for their workforce.
Since the guidance in L117 was written back in the late 1980’s, and more updated in 2000, many of the working environments and equipment has changed for the better. However, although workplaces and equipment have improved it doesn’t replace the need to provide adequate and regular operator training and fleet maintenance.
Fork lift trucks are reported to be one of the most common forms of vehicle involved in workplace transport injuries. This remains the case year on year and with this figure still a prominent feature in the news it is increasingly more important to safeguard our workforce.
Davis Derby’s TruckLOG TK5 system has been installed by a number of large scale warehouse operations to help improve the safety of their workforce. TK5’s smartcard access control and pre-operational checks help managers meet even the most stringent health and safety objectives and obligations within a materials handling environment.
The smartcard driver access control interface allows complete control over which drivers can operate vehicles and monitors drivers' licences and expiry dates against each driver, ensuring that only drivers with valid licences can use the vehicles. Alert messages are also delivered to enable timely driver retraining to be planned.
The TK5 system pre-operational checks have been designed so they can be scheduled as required. When defects are detected email or message alerts are sent to the relevant engineers or managers to make them aware of a failed pre-operational check and the software will then place a warning only on the vehicle or put the vehicle "Off Road" (VOR).
TruckLOG improves the efficienct management of fork lift vehicle fleets and offer a number of benefits to health and safety obligations including:
• Driver training scheduling, driver’s license expiry and validity all managed in the same system.
• Notifications and alerts delivered to warehouse supervisors, management and engineers to enable live control of the fleet.
• Ensure that only those qualified to use particular vehicles are allowed access.
• Control where and how fast vehicles can be driven.
With a growing range of software options TruckLOG provides warehouse and fleet managers the flexibility to help improve safety and productivity.
