Davis Derby works with St Petersburg Mining University.
Davis Derby is a world leader in the design and manufacture of monitoring and protection equipment for the underground mining industry and has recently hosted a post graduate from Russia.
The St Petersburg State Mining Institute and Technical University is Russia's oldest higher education establishment devoted to engineering. The University is one of the oldest mining schools in Europe, and home to one of the world's finest and most exclusive collections of gem and mineral samples.
Sergey Taranov, a post-graduate mining engineer student of the University visited Davis Derby as a result of the company’s strong trading links with Russia.
Based in Derby in the heart of the UK, Davis Derby has provided safety automation equipment to some of the largest underground mines in the UK and overseas. One of the projects that the company were keen to demonstrate to the post-graduate was the control and monitoring system of the first underground main mine ventilation fans in use at Unity Coal Mine in South Wales.
Visiting this site demonstrated how designing and manufacturing a system such as this has the safety of mine workers as the main priority.
Paul Briggs, Business Director of Davis Derby, is keen to work more closely with the St Petersburg University: “The University approached us last year and had a number of post graduate students that wanted to get more work experience in the UK. We are always keen to work with our partners overseas and we have been delighted that Sergey has been able to see a number of processes in the field to help him progress his career as a mining engineer.”
Davis Derby range of MineWATCH products includes high speed data systems, speech communication, audible warning systems, conveyor automation, general purpose and environmental automation, underground personnel identification and vehicle tracking systems.

Product Notes
Mine safety in automation has been the priority at Davis Derby and the company has led the way in product development, harnessing high-tech manufacturing and the potential of microprocessor based controllers.
MineWATCH is a range of products enabling underground mines to monitor and protect people and plant and communicate clearly and effectively with onsite personnel.
Products range from speech communication and audible warning systems, through comprehensive conveyor protection equipment, to fully integrated SCADA control consoles operable over distances in excess of ten kilometres. Our access control and tracking range also offers valuable safety and security benefits.
Created with maximum site safety and efficiency – and therefore profitability – in mind, all equipment destined for underground use is certified and designed to the ATEX M1 or M2 European Standards. Several systems also hold International approvals for use in Coal mines in territories such as Russia, Kazakhstan and India.
